Snake
A downloadable Arcade for Windows
Recreation of a classic game Snake made in Unreal Engine 5 using Blueprints.
Controls:
Move up - W/Up
Move left - A/Left
Move down - S/Down
Move right - D/Right
Restart - R
Case Study:
The goal of recreating this game was to get a better understanding of how simple mechanics, combined with spatial limitations, can lead to increasing tension and difficulty over time, while also practicing work with the engine
Observations:
The main thing I noticed was that the difficulty level naturally emerges from player actions. Game is getting harder without introducing additional mechanincs.
Along with the growth of the snake, the difficulty increases:
- decreasing space available for maneuvering,
- playing bad and making mistakes are becoming more and more punishing,
- thinking ahead and planning next moves is becoming more important.
Challenge and what I would improve next:
I also observed that gameplay heavily depends on quick decisions. This emphasized the importance of the movement clarity and input responsivness. This was the biggest challenge for me to get right and it is definitely the next thing I would try to improve.
Lessons Learned:
Recreating this game showed me how strong gameplay loops can emerge from very simple mechanics when combined with clear rules and ramping pressure.
It also showed me how gameplay tempo and spatial pressure can create challenges without the need for additional content or mechanics.
Another thing I learned is importance of readability in games that require quick decision-making.
